Brian Joyce, tenor, has performed with opera companies in Europe and the United States. His roles run the gamut of styles and periods, including Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, and Sam in Street Scene. As a recurring favorite with Austin Lyric Opera, Mr. Joyce is especially recognized for his distinctive characterizations. Notable performances include an athletic rendition of Blind in Die Fledermaus while on crutches with a torn ligament in his knee, and most recently, Dr. S. in Michael Nyman’s chamber opera, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, in which the Austin Chronicle complimented the “subtle gestures and expressions that revealed the depths of (his) feelings”. Past engagements with Austin Lyric Opera include roles in Rigoletto, L’Etoile, and the American premiere of Philip Glass’ Waiting for the Barbarians. Mr. Joyce will return to Austin Lyric Opera for the 2010-2011 season as Gastone in La Traviata.

His other American engagements have included La Boheme with the Dallas Opera, Salome with Opera Cleveland, and Die Zauberflöte with Opera in the Heights, as well as concert appearances with Key West Symphony and the Austin Classical Guitar Society. His previous European engagements include numerous performances in Oldenburg at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater (Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Erendira), and in Düsseldorf at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Norma, L’Orfeo, L’Amour des Trois Oranges, La Traviata).

Mr. Joyce received his Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas and his Master of Music from Stephen F. Austin State University. His studies also include some doctoral work at the University of Texas. He was the resident artist and teacher at the SolFest Opera Seminar, sponsored by the Key West Symphony.
